What is Cl@ve PIN and how do you use it for Modelo 210?
Cl@ve PIN is one of the methods inside the Cl@ve system, Spain's common electronic identification for dealing online with the AEAT, social security, Catastro and other government bodies. It lets you file the annual Modelo 210 from any computer or phone without an installed digital certificate.
Cl@ve is the state platform regulated by Orden HAP/2194/2013 and aligned with Ley 39/2015 del Procedimiento Administrativo Común. It allows any citizen (resident or not) to identify themselves before the Spanish administrations using a single method. It comes in three flavours: digital certificate or DNIe (the classic method), Cl@ve PIN (a temporary PIN received on your phone each time you log in), and Cl@ve permanente (username + password for longer sessions). For non-residents the most practical options are usually Cl@ve PIN or the newer Cl@ve Móvil (official app replacing the SMS step).
To register you have three routes: in person at an AEAT or social-security office (PIN issued on the spot, active immediately); via video identification from the AEAT website with NIE + passport; or via an invitation letter the AEAT mails to your tax address with an activation code. Video identification is generally the most useful for non-residents — no trip needed and active within 24-48 hours.
To file Modelo 210 you go to the AEAT e-Office, select "presentación con Cl@ve", enter your NIE/NIF and the system sends a 3-digit PIN to your phone or to the Cl@ve app. You concatenate that PIN with the password you chose at registration and access the form. The system signs and registers the filing; you get a downloadable PDF acknowledgement. Important: Cl@ve PIN has a per-session validity (one PIN, one session); if you want to log in repeatedly without waiting for SMS each time, the Cl@ve Móvil app is the better choice.
Alternatively you can use an FNMT digital certificate or a DNIe + card reader. The FNMT certificate is free but involves a technical install-and-export process that many non-residents find tricky. Cl@ve PIN skips that technical step but ties you to the phone number where the PIN arrives; if you change number you must update it in Cl@ve (otherwise you lock yourself out).
Why it matters
Without Cl@ve PIN, a digital certificate, or a gestor with registered power of attorney, Modelo 210 is practically impossible to file from abroad. The AEAT killed paper filing for IRNR years ago and the vast majority of returns go through the e-Office. If you don't want to pay a gestor €100-€250 every year for a 20-minute filing, Cl@ve PIN is the tool — and it is free.
